On 27th January, 1915, the 1st Northamptonshire battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division, moved into trenches to the east of Cuinchy near La Bassée where they remained for the next four days. At 9.30am on 29th January their trenches came under a fierce attack for half an hour after which the enemy fell back to their own lines. 1st Northamptonshire sustained 27 casualties in this brief but fierce fight, a figure that the battalion diary called ‘slight’, not that Richard Lockyer, one of those killed would have agreed with this description. |
